Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two new drugs for heartburn that are known as proton pump inhibitors. PPIs (proton pump inhibitors), marketed under the brand names Nexium, Esomeprazole, and Protonix, are a class of medications that are indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acute heartburn in adults. The NABP announced that the FDA has approved a second, more potent form of proton pump inhibitor, proton pump inhibitors, such as Nexium and Protonix. These are currently the third and fourth-line drugs approved for the treatment of GERD and acute heartburn in adults. These medications are currently used in conjunction with acid-suppressive therapy to reduce acid production in the stomach, the only symptom of GERD. The FDA approved these drugs in May 2005 for the treatment of GERD. They are not recommended for use in children under the age of 18.

As the first heartburn drug to be approved by the FDA, the PPIs have been shown to be highly effective in the treatment of GERD. They are used to reduce acid production and, to a lesser extent, the symptoms of GERD, such as heartburn.

Nexium and Protonix are two of the more potent proton pump inhibitors that have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of GERD and acute heartburn in adults.
